A big part of what I do, involves working with more than just food and supplements… it’s about illuminating and optimizing the way your brain functions day to day, so that you feel good! Enter – music. You see, music lights up the pleasure center of your brain. And in this day and age, where so many things have become a temporary ‘fix’ (ex. peanut butter cups, venti triple latte, bottle of wine, pint of salted caramel ice cream, checking your FB page for recent likes and comments, etc.), it’s AWESOME to tap the constructive alternatives ‘out there’.
So – for those of you out there that are drawn to music, ‘listen up’ *heh heh*.
- Google Play Music
The list of music apps out there is long. And with such ready access to music, it’s easy to leverage the power of music and it’s pleasure supporting elements.
Music lights up the pleasure center of your brain.
In fact, listening to music (new music in particular) has been shown to provide a rush of pleasure as the notes sweep through your brain.
Here’s a brief summary of a study done which looked at the response in the brain’s pleasure center, when anticipating and listening to new music.
Researchers conducted the study at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, where they had 19 volunteers listen to 60 pieces of new music. Their interest was in finding out what happened when subjects listened to new music…with a particular focus on how this influenced their music purchasing choices.
Using functional resonance imaging (fMRI) they were able to track activity in the nucleus accumbens (the same reward center in the brain that lights up when you have really great food, awesome sex, or perhaps get a big ol’ bonus check for a job well done).
The anticipation of the next note was enough to bring about this ‘pleasure’ response.
If you’re like me, this comes as no surprise. It’s simply a nice lil’ confirmation of what your ears and your brain already know. Wanna put this concept to the test? Hop on over to my YouTube channel and give my ‘Relaxed Concentration’ playlist a listen here.
Here’s to new music & pleasure *huzzah!*,
